Cancún - Food

My holiday package included breakfast which was very plentiful. I must have had the healthiest breakfasts of the last few years because I always had a plate full of fresh fruit every morning!
As I filled my tummy well in the morning and I don't usually eat much, I had snacks during the day and then went out at night for dinner.

Snacks for the day can be easily bought in supermarkets.
From the most posh and expensive but with a good variety of fresh fruit:

Selecto

Mid-range:
7Eleven

To the cheapest (no fresh fruit at all):

Oxxo

I preferred street food for dinner because it was the local cuisine, easy to find, quick and cheap. It was also less awkward to sit by myself...

Taco al pastor - MXN$28 (£1, US$1.40)

Quesadillas - MXN$95 (£3.6, US$4.7)

Nachos com chorizo - MXN$140 (£5.3, US$7)

Burrito pastor - MXN$169 (£6.4, US$8.4)

A typical street food stand. No doors, just a roof. Sit, order, eat and go. No need to tip.

I found this street off Avenida Kukulcán which was a stark contrast to the avenue. Here the shops were tiny, the food simple and cheap, clearly the local's eating place. Avenida Kukulcán had the American style restaurants, the noisy nightclubs and the higher prices.

At Mercado 28 I sat in one of the restaurants for some seafood: El Cejas restaurant. There was a man on a xylophone playing for the patrons.

Ceviche caracol chico (ceviche sea snail - small plate) - MXN$140 (£5.3, US$7)

Chilpachole de Jaiba (crab soup): it's served in separate dishes and then you mix them. It's delicious!

MXN$160 (£6, US$8)

Coco Bongo has a fixed admission price of US$50. For that you can stay as long as you want and drink as much as you want. Mandalay Beach on the other side of the road cost US$30. Don't be stupid like me. Get there at the beginning of the night, not at the end of the night when you are already very tipsy.

On average drinks cost:
  • Lemonade / Bottled drink - MXN$50 (£1.90, US$2.49)
  • Flavoured water - MXN$30-40 (£1.14-1.52, US$1.49-1.99)
  • Cocktails - MXN$95-200  (£3.61-7.59, US$4.72-9.94)
  • Espresso - MXN$35-52 (£1.33-1.97, US$1.74-2.59)
  • Latté - MXN$70 (£2.66, US$3.48)
